WHUFSD Book Buddies: How Student Board Members Are Making a Difference

What began as an idea from two student Board of Education members has become a meaningful opportunity for high school and elementary students to connect through a shared love of reading.

Last year, Waterford-Halfmoon student Board of Education members Allison Sheehan and Grace Figero-Davis, who has since graduated, proposed an idea to bring students from different grade levels together. Their vision was simple: give high school students an opportunity to share their love of reading with younger students while serving as positive role models.

On Friday, November 6, that vision became a reality with the launch of Book Buddies, a new initiative bringing together Mrs. Clinton's high school Public Speaking class and Ms. Davidson's kindergarten class.

During the first Book Buddies gathering, high school students partnered with kindergarten students to read stories, explore books, and participate in reading activities together. The classroom came alive with conversation, laughter, and the excitement of students sharing stories and getting to know one another.

For the kindergarten students, the experience offered more than an opportunity to practice reading skills. It gave them a chance to build confidence, develop new friendships, and connect with older students they can look up to. For the high school students, it was an opportunity to strengthen their communication and leadership skills while making a positive difference in the lives of their younger peers.

Superintendent Michael Healey praised the initiative as an example of the strong sense of community at Waterford-Halfmoon.

"One of the things that makes Waterford-Halfmoon such a great school community is the connections our students build with one another," said Healey. "Our younger students look up to our high school students, and experiences like Book Buddies give them positive role models right here in their own school. I'm especially proud that this started with an idea from our student Board members. Grace and Allison saw an opportunity to bring students together, and they took the initiative to make it happen. This is student leadership at its best, turning a simple idea into something meaningful for our entire school community."

Book Buddies also demonstrates the importance of giving students a voice in shaping their school experience. What began as a suggestion from two student representatives has grown into a collaborative effort that brings together students and teachers across grade levels.

Thanks to the leadership of Allison and Grace and the support of Mrs. Clinton and Ms. Davidson, Book Buddies is off to a wonderful start.

It's a reminder that some of the best ideas for making our schools stronger come from the students themselves.
