A Special Welcome Back to Our Students

The classrooms have been cleaned and prepared.  The schedules have been revised and printed.  The supplies have been delivered.  Teachers have been spending time, organizing and preparing for the first weeks of classes.

It's hard to believe, but the 2010-11 school year is upon us!  I've spoken with so many people in recent days who have made the same comment: this past summer, perhaps more than any in recent years, has passed by so quickly.  The long, hot summer days have given way to shorter, cooler ones, and our focus now turns to the start of a new school year.

The 2010-11 school year will likely prove to be one of the more challenging years that school district officials and their communities have faced in New York in a very long time.  Factors related to the economy, state exams, and student health and wellness will influence our planning and action this year in many ways.  As your school district superintendent, I will remain committed to taking on these challenges, leading our staff and students through unusual, new and sometimes difficult times.  In turn, I ask all members of our school community to join me in facing these challenges in a positive and productive way so that, in the end, our students reap the rewards of our collective efforts.

Our students.  They are the very reason our school community exists, why we do what we do each and everyday.  I've had the pleasure of speaking with some of our fall sports athletes who have been in and around the school for practice already.  Their voices, excited and spirited, are constant reminders of why I chose education for a career.  Soon, the entire student body will return, and our building will be buzzing.  To our students - I welcome you back, and want you to know that I missed you during the summer.  I look forward to visiting your classes, seeing you at work.  I look forward to chatting with you in the halls and cafeteria.  I look forward to watching you compete for our athletic program, cheering you on with great Fordian Pride.  I look forward to seeing you perform artistically.  And I look forward to sharing your successes with the Waterford-Halfmoon community and beyond.

I am proud to be your superintendent, and prouder still of the efforts, successes, and character of the students of this fine district.  Welcome back!
